Why is it customary to paint eggs for Easter? Where did this tradition come from?

The biblical tradition says that Mary Magdalene gave the Roman emperor Tiberius an egg, saying the phrase: "Christ is Risen!" The monarch did not believe what was said and said that resurrection from the dead is impossible - it's like a white egg can turn red. And as soon as these words were spoken, the white egg turned bright red. This is how the tradition of dyeing Easter eggs was born, which exists to this day.

Many housewives traditionally paint eggs three days before Easter - on Maundy Thursday. There are a lot of different methods. To do this, use special food colors or use the juices of various vegetables to obtain different colors. For example, to dye Easter eggs light yellow or red-brown, you need to boil them in onion skins. The intensity of the color will depend on the amount of peel. Beetroot juice allows you to color eggs from light pink toburgundy. The longer the time of interaction of eggs with juice, the more intense the shade will be. A decoction of birch leaves is also used for coloring. It dyes eggs yellow or golden.

Easter eggs are called "crayons". And Easter eggs are those that are beautifully painted by hand.

In order to get different patterns on eggs without using their visual abilities, housewives resort to various methods.

You can get a speckled pattern if you roll wet eggs in dry rice and wrap in gauze before cooking in a coloring composition. The rice should stick well to the egg, so the ends of the gauze should be tightly tied with thread.

For a marbling effect on eggs, wrap them in onion skins and tie cotton over the top so that the folds leave imprints on the shell.
