Every country has national dog breeds. In Russia, domestic sentry and sentry species include the Central Asian, Caucasian, South Russian Shepherd Dogs, the Black Russian Terrier and the Moscow Watchdog. We will talk about the last breed today.
History of the breed
Unlike many dogs, the history of these animals is devoid of any mysteries and secrets. However, the Moscow watchdog breed appeared quite interesting. This dog was bred by special order of the state authorities.
After the end of the Second World War in the USSR, there was an urgent need to restore service dog breeding. By this time, many animals were endangered. Soviet amateur cynologists in the most difficult situation of devastation would not have been able to independently carry out this task. Therefore, this mission was assigned to the Krasnaya Zvezda nursery located in the Moscow region.
Military cynologists faced a difficult task - to create a new breed that wouldunited good security qualities, unquestioning obedience to a person, quick learning. Moreover, she had to become unpretentious in care, according to the constitution, quite powerful, but at the same time mobile and active.
Caucasian shepherd dogs and St. Bernards were selected for selection work. In addition, the blood of the Newfoundland, German Shepherd, Russian Pinto Hound, Russian Borzoi was added. The work was extremely difficult, as it is difficult to correct multi-breeding. Despite the difficulties, the cynologists brilliantly coped with the task.
As a result of collective creativity, a domestic breed was bred - the Moscow watchdog. Its first representatives (at that time still having the status of a hybrid) were shown at the Moscow exhibition in 1950
These were dogs from the same litter, which were born from the Caucasian shepherd dog Asha and St. Bernard Barry. These animals already had common features of the future breed. On this, the work of the dog handlers was not completed. They sought to ensure that the new breed became recognizable and unique, to be different from their ancestors.
The selection process was completed in the middle of the last century. Then a breed of Moscow watchdogs appeared. The very first standard appeared in 1958.
Further work to improve the breed was carried out by specialized clubs and amateur dog breeders. The Moscow watchdog, whose photo we posted in our article, has officially received confirmation of its status inin accordance with the approved standard in 1985. Seven years later (1992) it was somewhat modified. However, according to fans of the breed, not for the better. In 1998, several more additions were made to it.
Moscow watchdog - breed description
A massive dog with strong bones and well-developed muscles - this is how the Moscow watchdog appears before us. Photos do not convey the proper impression of the power of this animal.
The body is slightly elongated, the limbs are large, long and straight. Height at the withers is on average 78 cm (males) and 73 cm (females), and there are no upper height limits, but tall dogs are more valued. Lightness of physique, insufficient massiveness are serious vices.
Physical Data
Moscow watchtower has a rough type of addition. The animal is active, despite the massive physique, has a voluminous, well-developed musculature. The head is large, proportional to the body, which allows us to say that the dog is harmoniously built.
Cheekbones and occiput powerful, skull slightly longer than muzzle. The lips are large, dry, not falling below the jaw. Broad forehead, rather small eyes, framed by pigmented eyelids. Small triangular ears are located slightly above the line of the eyes. The fringed edge of the ear is quite close to the cheekbone.
Moscow watchdog is distinguished by a well-defined withers and muscularneck. She has a straight back, a powerful, protruding chest and a taut, tight stomach. The tail is set high. In a calm state, the dog lowers it down. The whole body is covered with coarse hair with a well-developed undercoat.
Despite the fact that according to the standard, the Moscow guard dog should have a straight coat, if it is slightly wavy, this is not a fault.
Character
When breeding this breed, breeders set themselves the goal of raising a dog with a kind and gentle character in relation to the owner and vigilant and aggressive towards strangers. It must be admitted that the dog handlers solved the task with brilliance. Today we can say with confidence that the nature of the Moscow watchdog is a mixture of opposites. With his family, this is a friendly and even gentle bear cub. He is very fond of playing with children (if they are family members) and he will never harm them.
When outside, he instantly transforms into a formidable guardian. From the side, the dog resembles an angry bear. Its formidable roar and intimidating appearance will not cause doubts in anyone - this beast will not be amiable with strangers (including children), so you need to take the dog for a walk only in a muzzle and on a leash.
Color
The breed standard suggests a two-color color. It predominates in animals in the south of the country. Reddish-brown is more common than others; animals with black-red, white-red color are often born. The dog's chest is always covered with whitewool.
Moscow watchdog puppies
These kids quickly get used to the new house, its routine, the owners. Before you start such a complex breed, we advise you to weigh the pros and cons well. See if you can handle this giant. Will you be able to combine dominance and calmness in relation to your pet, which has a strong character. Can you respect his bright personality.
You shouldn't start a Moscow watchdog for the elderly, teenagers. An owner with a gentle character will not cope with a Muscovite. You need to know that by the age of six months the puppy will begin to try to take his own and, as a rule, the leading position in the family (pack). At this tender age, a baby weighs an average of 40 kg with a height of 70 cm, so the strong and powerful hand of the leader of the pack will be simply necessary in order to hold its ground.
This dog needs early socialization and training like no other. If this is not done at the most tender age, then by the age of one and a half it will be almost impossible to correct behavior.
With a dog living in the yard or aviary, you can not limit communication only during feeding. You need to talk to her, take her for walks.
Like all Great Danes, the Moscow watchdog matures by a year and a half. At the age of three, the animal is considered fully formed.
To the puppyThe Moscow watchdog has grown a he althy and beautiful animal, it needs to be well fed with balanced feed, take a lot of time for walks, and not limit its movement.
Education and training
Many cynologists know that even from the smallest dog with an illiterate upbringing, a real domestic tyrant grows, and mistakes in raising such a giant as the Moscow watchdog can turn into much more serious troubles.
From puppyhood, an animal should know its place in the house, literally and figuratively. It is obliged to learn well the command “No!”, which under no circumstances can not fail. Despite the late maturation, do not postpone classes with a puppy for later. Start them from the first days of the appearance of the baby in the house.
First, try to identify what reactions prevail in the dog, what physical abilities it has. Only based on the data obtained, you can start working with the dog. Owners of these animals need to know that heavy physical activity is contraindicated until the year of the Moscow watchdog. This is due to continued bone growth.
Maintenance and Care
It is preferable to keep a Muscovite outside the city - these animals love nature and develop well in such conditions.
The dog needs regular (at least 3 times a week) brushing. An animal must be accustomed to this procedure from the first days of life, then in adulthood.your pet will treat it like something normal as it ages.
The rest of these dogs are unpretentious. They feel great both in the summer heat and in severe frosts.
Moscow watchdog - price
On average, the cost of a puppy from breeders is 15 thousand rubles. In nurseries, prices are slightly higher - 20 thousand rubles.
Opinions of dog breeders
Moscow watchdog, reviews of which are very contradictory, can only be grown and educated by an imperious, intelligent, strong and sociable person.
The protective qualities of this dog do not cause any complaints from the owners, but many complain about the difficulties in education, the stubbornness of the animal and its desire for indispensable leadership in the family.
