There are domestic and industrial sewing machines. One of the differences between them is the needle holder. This is the hole where the needle is inserted and fixed. The hole has a certain size, shape and depth. Therefore, only a needle with a certain length and shape will suit a certain type of machine.

Varieties

If you look closely, you will find a number on the bulb of the needle. These are the numbers that indicate its diameter (thickness). Size ranges from 60mm to 110mm.

  1. 60, 70, 75 mm - sewing machine needles that are used when sewinglight fabrics. The point is slightly rounded, which prevents the formation of puncture marks after sewing. This is achieved due to the fact that the needle does not punch a hole, but pushes the fabric fiber apart. It is very good to sew knitwear, chiffon, silk and other “delicate” fabrics with such needles.

80, 90 mm - needles for heavier fabrics. The tip is pointed, which facilitates the entry of the needle into the fabric and prevents the formation of skipped stitches. Use them when sewing trousers, jackets, suits, outerwear, etc.

  3. 100, 110, 120 mm - the thickest and sharpest needles for sewing machines. Used for sewing coats, denim, twill, tarpaulin. They are very durable, capable of sewing through fabric layers up to 1.5 cm thick.

There are also universal needles, embroidery, for sewing leather.

  1. Universal. Can be any size, suitable for "non-capricious" fabrics.
  2. Embroidery. Designed for embroidery with special threads, they differ in the hole of the eye of the needle. It is slightly wider, designed to not damage the fabric or thread.
  3. Leather needles have a slightly flattened cutting point. Ideal for sewing leather goods and leatherette. Their peculiarity is that they carefully cut the skin and do not leave marks after stitching.

Differences

Needles for industrial sewing machines are different from household needles. This is the top of the needle that goes into the needle holder. Needle flask forindustrial machines is rounded, and for household machines it has a longitudinal section. The second difference is the length. You will not be able to insert needles of different lengths into the needle holder, and if you do, you will not be able to stitch.

On any needle there is a groove located along, it helps to guide the thread. When installing the needle in an industrial machine, the groove should be on the side of the left hand. Household machines are completely different. For example, the sewing machine "Seagull" is distinguished by the installation of the needle. The machine sews a straight stitch, zigzag and finishing stitches, so the needle is set with the groove forward, and the cut of the flask in it is away from you.

Properly selected sewing machine needles will provide you with a beautiful and even stitch, prevent thread breakage and a product without punctures.
