Many of us are touched by cute kittens. Domestic Shorthair, Savannah, Siberian, Persian and many other breeds are popular with our compatriots. All these animals are very different from each other not only externally, but also in character. After reading today's article, you will learn about the features of the content of the most expensive breed in the world.

A Brief History

This breed was bred by pure chance. When Bengal cat breeder Judy Frank crossed a Siamese with a male serval in 1986, she did not even hope to get offspring. However, in due time, a very beautiful baby was born. The newborn cat was named Savannah. Subsequently, it was she who became the first officially recognized representative of the breed of the same name.

Until that moment, no one dared to work with serval hybrids. And only Susie Woods came up with a brilliant idea to try to mate Savannah with a domestic cat. As a result, onseveral litters of kittens appeared, which are considered hybrids of the second generation. Thus, Woods was able to confirm the reality of the creation of a new breed. But, as it turned out a little later, she did not plan to seriously engage in breeding the resulting animals, so in 1989 Patrick Kelly became interested in this issue, who bought out the only female born by Savannah.

For the first time, representatives of the new breed were shown at a cat show held in New York in 1997. A few years later, these animals were officially registered.

Price and selection of a kitten

It should be understood that the cultivation of savannahs is a very difficult task, which is done only by specialists. All these difficulties, combined with the rapidly growing popularity of this exotic cat, have led to a significant increase in the price of kittens. The average cost of such a baby ranges from one to ten thousand dollars. Therefore, before making a final decision to purchase a representative of this breed, you need to realistically assess your financial and physical capabilities.

When choosing a Savannah kitten, one should not forget that a conscientious breeder will never sell an animal that is under three or four months old. By this age, the baby should receive all the necessary vaccinations and be tested for aggression. By the way, the last requirement is considered a prerequisite for all representatives of this breed. This is due to the fact that their ancestors are wild cats.

Description of externalkind

It should be noted that the Savannah kitten is very similar to a miniature serval. They stand out from other breeds with spotted color, long legs, large ears and noble posture. They grow to their maximum size only by the age of three. The parameters of these animals directly depend on the generation. The largest males are F1 and F2. Their weight can be up to fourteen kilograms with a height of about fifty centimeters.

These animals are covered with rather thick, fluffy, but not too long hair of a golden, chocolate, brown or silver hue. Also, the standard allows the existence of a color called cinnamon tabby.

Behavior and character

Before the Savannah kittens, the photo of which will be presented below, appear in your house, it is advisable to find out more about their features. Representatives of this breed are not indifferent to water. They are great swimmers and love to shower. So, a savannah kitten is able to play for hours with a stream of water flowing from a tap. They feel great outdoors. In addition, they are very jumpy. Ideally, they should be kept in a country house or in a private house. These animals can be walked. They quickly get used to walking on a leash and behave well on the street.

These cats can't stand being alone, they need the constant company of their owner or other pets. Interestingly, they get along best with dogs.

Socialization

First generation hybrids often show wild behavior. They may growl or hiss at strangers and make chirping sounds similar to those heard from a serval. Therefore, the selection of these animals involves not only improving their exterior, but also their character. Each three-month-old Savannah kitten is necessarily tested for aggression towards humans.

The hybrids of the third and fourth generations are best for keeping at home. These individuals can sit on the owner's lap and even allow themselves to be stroked on the head. In general, their mannerisms will strongly resemble those of ordinary domestic cats. The only difference is their increased activity and mobility.

Savannah kitten: home care

These animals throughout their lives need systematic combing, brushing their teeth and ears. It is important to accustom the animal to hygiene procedures as early as possible.

What does a Savannah kitten eat?

The maintenance of this animal implies not only regular hygiene procedures, but also the organization of a proper, well-balanced diet. It is important that the kitten, which ended up with new owners, receives the usual food for him during the first weeks. If necessary, it is advisable to change the diet gradually.

The Savannah is a fast growing breed, so her diet should include nutritious foods. Those who decide to give their pet natural food should try to ensure that their menu contains a sufficient amount of raw meat. Among other things, the Savannah kitten should receive vitamin supplements with colostrum, taurine and carotene.

Followers of dry food can be advised to opt for premium products with a low grain content. In this case, the animal does not need additional mineral-vitamin complexes.
