Dobermans are used by humans as bloodhounds, watchdogs and guide dogs.

History of the breed

The breed was bred by the German tax collector Friedrich Louis Dobermann at the end of the 19th century.

Friedrich's position was fraught with danger, and he needed an aggressive dog that could protect him, and at the same time did not require special care. Dobermann was the owner of a shelter for stray dogs, so it was not difficult for him to realize his plans. Having crossed breeds of dogs characterized by aggressiveness, endurance and high watchdog qualities - German Pinscher, Rottweiler, Manchester Terrier and Hound, Dobermann in a short time brought out the type of dog he needed. Subsequently, the bred breed was named after its owner and became known as the Doberman.

Distinctive features of the breed

The Doberman breed stands out for its elegant and proud appearance. It's fearlessa muscular and quick-witted dog - qualities that make it possible to use the Doberman as a guard and watchman. A developed sense of smell contributes to the fact that the Doberman is considered an unsurpassed bloodhound. The dog is strongly attached to the owner and members of his family, does not trust strangers, and is moderately aggressive. If these qualities are developed by training, then an excellent guide comes out of the Doberman.

Are there white Dobermans

In the 70s of the last century, an attempt was made in the United States to breed a white-coated Doberman. An albino bitch was born from ordinary parents. When she reached puberty, she was crossed with a traditional-colored Doberman, but there was no white puppy in the litter. White Dobermans appeared as a result of crossing a mother bitch with her son. These dogs served as the progenitors of all albino Doberman dogs found in the United States. Therefore, a white Doberman is considered incomplete or partial albino. It did not make sense to fix the result, since the bred white individuals did not differ in intelligence, had unpredictable behavior, and were susceptible to various diseases due to low immunity. Like all albinos, they are deprived of the genes responsible for pigmentation and are doomed to suffering, but this does not mean that white Dobermans have no right to exist at all.

Why the FCI does not recognize albino Dobermans

Until the beginning of the last century, only the black and tan color of this breed of dog was recognized. Later, another color was taken as the standard - brown and tan. Until recently, white Dobermans were born extremely rarely, were considered a deviation from the norm and were culled.

Not so long ago, American and British cynologists bred a new, so-called blue and isabella color of dogs of this breed. But the International Cynological Federation (FCI), which approves breed standards, does not recognize this lightened color in Dobermans. And for this, the FCI has quite reasonable explanations: light and white Dobermans have poor he alth and have a number of genetic problems. They suffer from photophobia, which negatively affects the watchdog and working qualities of dogs of this breed, and their further breeding is considered inappropriate.

Should I get a white Doberman puppy

It's no secret that a person loves everything unusual, and the temptation to get a white-coated Doberman puppy is quite strong. Sometimes dishonest and money-hungry dog breeders try to convince their potential buyers that they are breeding white Doberman dogs. The price of albino Dobermans is exorbitant, and in fact, in the pursuit of profit, you will be sold a sick animal with a weakened immune system. For the information of breed lovers, you can buy a Doberman puppy from private sellers at a price of 15 to 35 thousand rubles. But in the nursery, the price can reach up to 60 thousand rubles. For a white Doberman, owners can charge twice as much. But is it worth it to spend so much? As long as the puppy is small and has enough strength to fight for its existence, birth defects are almost invisible. But over time, the dog becomes more nervous and cowardly, gets lost, once in unfamiliar conditions. More and more attention has to be paid to the state of her he alth - the animal develops skin diseases, problems associated with the activity of the thyroid gland appear, the already rare coat falls out, and the dog goes bald.

In order not to jeopardize the gene pool of the breed as a whole, it is not recommended to breed Dobermans with blue or Isabella colors.

How to choose the right Doberman puppy

The Doberman breed is finding more and more new followers. However, before buying a Doberman puppy, think carefully about whether you will be able to create the conditions necessary for its proper development and for what purpose you need a dog of this particular breed. Choose who is more preferable for you - male or female.

A he althy and thoroughbred puppy should have dark eyes, a long neck, a strong, almost square body. Curved limbs and light spots are defects. It is believed that the more pronounced the tan, the stronger the animal's immune system.

A 1.5-month-old puppy should have its tail docked - the wound should have healed by this time. At the same age, Doberman puppies can begin to crop their ears, so if you do not have enough experience in breeding dogs, then you can buy a pet with already cropped ears.

Until the age of 3 months, the puppy must be vaccinated against leptospirosis, distemper and parvovirus infection.

For the acquired puppy, the new owner should be given a puppycard.
