Many, not knowing when Mother's Day is celebrated in our country, often miss it.
When did it appear?
The fact is that this date is not very popular. The reason is that the holiday officially began to be celebrated not so long ago - on the basis of the Decree of the President, it began to be celebrated starting in 1998. From that moment, a specific date was chosen when Mother's Day was to take place - the last Sunday of the month that ends autumn. It is, of course, about November.
In fact, the tradition of paying special attention to all mothers on a particular day of the year exists not only in our country. The holiday is considered international - it is known in more than 50 countries around the world. In the same England, the origins of this wonderful tradition originate in the 17th century. And they called it in those days "Maternal Sunday", closely associating it with a number of church dates.
Traditions of other countries
In the US, we know this date firsthand, but they celebrate Mother's Day in early May. It was "introduced" in the country thanks to the initiative of Anna Jarvis, who lives in Philadelphia. She suggested paying special attention to women with children on the day of her mother's death - May 2. And societysupported her. Since then, everyone there knows when Mother's Day is celebrated, and the scale of the holiday has long taken on national dimensions, Americans love it very much. He was first heard about in the US in 1914.
Another 23 countries, deciding when their Mother's Day will be celebrated, chose the same date. The rest celebrate at a convenient time for them: the Belarusians chose October, the Spaniards - December, and the Lebanese - March. And, perhaps, only in Russia with the advent of this day, when children give mothers flowers and postcards, the celebration is carried out beyond the boundaries of families. Simply put, it takes on an official level, because in various cities they always honor all mothers who raise more than three children. For them, various kinds of concerts, festivals are arranged, they are awarded the "Parental Glory" awards. In Europe, on this day, it is simply customary to come to visit mothers with small gifts and bouquets.
Features of the celebration
Mother's Day 2013 in Russia was celebrated on November 25, and this year it will be celebrated on the 30th of the same month. In Soviet times, mothers were awarded three types of medals. The most "simple" was awarded for raising 5 or 6 children. It was called "Medal of Motherhood". And the most honorable thing for a woman with many children was then receiving the Order of the Mother Heroine (it was given for raising 10 or more offspring).
Nowadays, the awards are completely different. There are two of them, they have the same names (“Parental Glory”), but the types are different. So, the medal of the order is given to both parents for raising from 4 to 7 children. BUTthe award itself will be given to dad and mom, who put seven or more on their feet at once. (The status of "mother heroine" as such no longer exists.)
In the latter case, by the way, each parent is given two signs: one in full size, the other in miniature, so that you can wear it at especially solemn moments. These awards are different for men and women. A prerequisite for contenders for the award (the requirement existed both in Soviet times and now): such families, so to speak, should set an example for society in everything related to raising children.
