With the advent of computers in private offices and government organizations, there was a need for a very specific (at that time) employee - a system administrator, someone who would service these same electronic machines and the Internet at the same time. And as befits any respected profession, there is a professional holiday for these computer specialists - System Administrator Day.

Without them, computers don't work, printers don't print, computers don't connect to the network, emails don't send, servers don't work, websites crash, and software crashes. They are system administrators. Usually you rarely see them outside the office, and if you do, you can be sure that this specialist in his field is running to help another employee in the organization. Well, or go to dial the kettle, because the working day of the system administrator can be full of both work and idleness. Very often they are compared with doctors. They are never remembered as long as everything works like clockwork. But it costs some gear in this very watchfail, whether it be a computer or a program, a printer, Internet connections or something else, they immediately remember about it and urgently run to call and call for help.

It is clear that in Russia the profession of "system administrator" is also popular and such specialists are in demand. But there is a small but. Unlike their foreign colleagues, our system administrators can do everything: install Windows, fix a computer, create a website, set up a server, write a report, download an essay or coursework for the boss, periodically take pictures of the team, unload something (especially if the remaining team is female). These are unique people who are used to communicating more with computers than with real people, work exclusively from the energy of coffee (rare models - from tea), hate stupid questions and stupid users. And with such a stressful job, they just need a holiday like System Administrator Day.

It's interesting that many of these specialists have a special tool - a shamanic sysadmin tambourine, with which half of all breakdowns are repaired (this is, of course, a joke, but many really have one).

System Administrator Day

One day, Ted Kekatos, an American sysadmin, saw a Hewlett-Packard advertisement in a magazine describing how happy users thanked the sysadmin with fruits and flowers for installing severalprinters. Inspired by this note, and also by the fact that Ted himself had recently installed several of the same printers, he decided to organize a special System Administrator Day. The choice fell on the last Friday of July, or rather on July 28, 2000. That day it was just a small picnic in nature with colleagues from a software company. As expected, the rest of the world learned about this event. And since then, all the system administrators of the world accept congratulations on the Day of the system administrator on the last Friday of July. Of course, if none of the equipment breaks that day, they will not be remembered again.

As you can see, there is no fixed date for this holiday, since the date of the last Friday of July changes every year. So, the Day of the system administrator-2015 was held on July 31. However, it has long passed, so it is better to think about the future sysadmin event, which will be celebrated on July 29, 2016. Therefore, if there is a great desire to congratulate the computer doctor, it is worth remembering, but it is better to write down this date.

Festival

However, perhaps the system administrator will not be able to be congratulated on this day. The fact is that on the last Friday and the weekend of the same July, the All-Russian Gathering of System Administrators is held - a festival near Kaluga, dedicated to the Day of the Computer Scientist, in the open air. Participants from more than 150 settlements in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan are involved in various exciting competitions, such as throwing a keyboard and mouse for distance and accuracy, a lottery by participant number, a competition for laying a network around the area. There are also discos, rock concerts,fireworks and a large "sysadmin" bonfire - participants set fire to stuffed lamers from last year's rally. A similar rally is also taking place in Novosibirsk.

Official Geek Day

In addition to the holiday described above (System Administrator's Day), there is also World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. Unlike the first, this holiday was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2006 and is celebrated on May 17th. So we can assume that system administrators have two professional holidays.

What to give?

As you know, on holidays it is supposed to give gifts. But what to give the system administrator for the Day of the system administrator-2015 and in subsequent years? The first thing that comes to mind is a flash drive. But why should he give something that he himself has in bulk. Mug? Not worth it, unless, of course, she's super cool. Key chains, towels and all sorts of banal things will also not work. Need something like that. For example, the same tambourine, an external hard drive will be a good present, a subscription somewhere. A day off on this day would also be nice or some kind of creative that would be appropriate (a congratulatory cake, for example). In the same way, you can wish a system administrator a happy birthday.

In general, in no case should you ignore this holiday, since system administrators are people too, they will be pleased to receive a gift on their professional holiday and see what theirloved and appreciated in the office. In addition, a lot depends on them, namely the technical organization of the normal operation of the office, which simply will not exist without them.
