The Chausie cat is rightfully considered one of the rarest breeds of domestic cats. Their breeding is limited to the American continent, with only a few people involved in it. Breeders who control the development of this breed are very careful to ensure that breeding animals do not fall into the hands of inexperienced breeders. The thing is that their crossing is permissible only with ordinary shorthair cats and with Abyssinians.

History of the origin of the breed

From time immemorial, wild cats liked to settle close to human habitation. Often they climbed into abandoned houses. This was directly related to the fact that a large number of mice lived in the abandoned huts, which served as a source of food. Close proximity to humans increased the ability of wild felines to interbreed with domestic cats. Most of these hybrid animals are observed in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

For a long period of time, no one paid attention to the hybrids running through the streets of Egypt. But once they did attract the attention of an American tourist, a connoisseur of cats. It was on his initiative that a project was established to develop a new, one might say, elitebreed.

The breeding program that created the Chausie cat breed began in the United States at the end of 1968. The program was based on domestic cats living in Egypt. Breeders, interested in unusual creatures that surprisingly combine the features of a wild and domestic animal, took several cats to America. As a result of research, it was found that even the swamp lynx appears in the ancestors of the Chausie. It was from her that the Chausie cat received a lean body with well-developed muscles, strong limbs and large sizes. The breed was registered in the TICA registry in 1995. Official status was allocated in 2003.

Chausie (cats): breed description

This cat is almost twice the size of all other domestic cats. The athletic physique of the animal with large ears crowned with small tassels gives the impression of a small cougar, which is exactly what connoisseurs of the breed often call their pets. The distinctive features of the breed include the so-called false eyes, which are located on the back of the ears. These are small spots that resemble the shape of the eyes. Their purpose in the wild is to scare enemies from behind. “I'm looking at you,” they say to those who approached the cat from behind.

Chausie is a cat with a large, massive head. Strictly defined angles of the cheekbones and a developed chin give the appearance of the animal a primordial wildness. The eyes are large, almond-shaped, deep green or bright yellow. Howand relies in the animal kingdom, cats are more massive than cats, and larger than them in size. They can grow up to forty centimeters at the withers. Animals can weigh up to fourteen kilograms.

The long tail of the animal should be equal in length to two thirds of the entire body of the animal.

Chausie cats, reviews of which can be heard from American cat lovers, attract attention primarily with their special coat. The thick and dense short hair of these animals has an unusual silky sheen that shimmers in the sun.

Today the Chausie cat is presented in the following colors:

  • Black.
  • Silver.
  • Ticked.
  • Ticked tabby.

Chowsie Breeding

It is very difficult to breed these capricious animals. Chausie is a cat whose price is quite high, it does not bring homogeneous offspring. Most often, quite ordinary, unremarkable kittens are born to her. Only occasionally breeders manage to get the desired result. In addition, most cats of this breed, for genetic reasons, are not able to reproduce.

All these circumstances in combination became the reason that the Chausie cat received the status of a rare and expensive animal, difficult to breed.

Behavioral features

The character of Chausie, a cat with a predatory look and a graceful body of a wild animal, is striking in its kindness. Representatives of this breed will be happy to rub against their legs.owners and barely audible purr to them, reminding them of their tender feelings - this is what the breeders say. These are very sociable animals, however, their wild roots make themselves felt - they are big fans of steeplechase. Without a doubt, they will master all the hard-to-reach places in the apartment: shelves under the ceiling, mezzanines and tall cabinets.

Wherever the Chausie cat lives, she should feel freedom, it is desirable to provide her with active walks in the fresh air. Representatives of the breed are good for walking on a leash. With them, you can easily walk in the garden and in the park. The wild energy of the animal must find a way out. Otherwise, it is fraught with unpleasant consequences for the furniture in the apartment. This can be avoided by providing your pet with active play and walks.

Animals are very sociable. They willingly find a common language with children. They get along well with other cats and dogs. But you should not leave them alone with hamsters, parrots and other small animals. Hunting instincts will certainly take over, and the chausie can "play" very unsuccessfully.

Features of Chausie feeding

The digestion of these cats deserves special attention. Breeders claim that this is a problem area of the breed, as animals tend to overeat. Cereal crops are especially harmful to them. Therefore, you should not feed chausies with industrial feeds containing a large amount of them.

It is also necessary to ensure that animals do not overeat - this tendency has remained with them fromwild ancestors.

Exotic pet care

Chausie coat care is simple. It is enough to comb it out with a massage brush once a week. They are relatively calm about water procedures. However, do not abuse it, so as not to wash out the natural fat on the skin of animals and not spoil the coat.

He alth

Besides a tendency to overeat and a heavy perception of cereals, Chausie cats are in excellent he alth. Apparently, good immunity went to animals from their wild ancestors. They practically do not get sick with infectious diseases and do not catch colds.

Nurseries

According to officially confirmed data, several states are engaged in breeding. These are Nevada, Arizona, Florida and California. The breeders of the breed are also registered in France. Unconfirmed sources of information report a Russian nursery located in the Moscow region and a nursery in Ukraine.

Kitten rearing

Growing Chausie kittens is not difficult. They do not require special care. All that is needed is to limit the volume of the daily diet and provide games and entertainment for the little friend. An interesting fact is that even heavily played Chausie babies do not scratch at all. Feeling the human skin under the claws, they immediately hide them in the pads and continue the game with a completely soft paw.
