Progress has come a long way, and we are happy to enjoy its benefits, but there are some things that we sincerely regret the loss of. For example, letters and postcards, which are replaced by SMS and e-mail. They do not carry that warmth and touchingness that carried leaves with neatly drawn letters, folded into affectionate words. Along with letters and postcards, photographs also sank into oblivion. We have long been putting them not in beautiful photo albums, but in ordinary folders formed on the computer desktop. The digital form is, of course, convenient, but the opportunity to pick up a piece of history printed on glossy paper is worth a lot. That's what we'll talk about today: photographs, portraits and engravings in passe-partout.

We associate this word not with its direct meaning, but with the name of one of the heroes of the popular TV show ("Fort Bayard") or a servant from Jules Verne's story "Around the World in 80 Days". In fact, a passe-partout is a cardboard frame for various kinds of works of art, including photographs. It was especially popular in the XVIII - XX centuries. The main quality of such a framework is the ability to strike a balance betweenby what is depicted on the artwork, and by what this work will be framed. Meanwhile, a passe-partout is not only something that can hold work, protect against negative phenomena and balance colors and textures, but also something that can serve as the basis for various kinds of notes, autographs, explanations, being in essence fields between work and frame.

Now to the details, and in principle there are not very many of them. A distinctive feature of all copies is a rectangular or oval cutout in the center. A portrait, photograph or other type of artwork is placed in the slot, then the entire exposition is fixed in a frame. This form of decoration allows, if necessary, to focus on something specific. Can increase the size of the work due to optical illusion. A small picture will look ridiculous in a large frame, but a passe-partout will easily help it look adequate. This is just a storehouse for decorating, not only the premises, but also the works themselves, which, as a result of a little refinement, receive a new life.

Let's look at the design of the passe-partout. The most banal and common is, of course, frames made of contrasting material. We do not mean the frames of the frame in which the passe-partout will be placed, but additional accents from contrasting materials. The next most common is the color solutions of the material. In addition to the fact that it can harmonize or contrast the work itself, it has the power to combine several essentially different images into one composition that forms a singledesign decision. Talking about a variety of flowers and angels that can bring additional characteristic features is not even worth talking about, it's trite. The last design technique that can make the passe-partout unforgettable is a photo, portrait or engraving collage. Such a move can make the work more touching and tender as well as harden it.
