The world owes this holiday to the United States and Canada, where it is truly celebrated. In the rest of the world, people only know what Groundhog Day is and sometimes the history of the holiday. Celebrations take place annually on February 2, when people watch the groundhog crawl out of its hole, thus predicting the arrival of spring.

Groundhog Day: where predictions come from

So, Groundhog Day is a holiday of spring predictions, when people actively monitor the behavior of animals crawling out of cozy minks. As you know, marmots are shy creatures, so predictions should not be considered absolutely accurate. In most cases, the following trend can be traced: if the day turned out to be cloudy, the groundhog does not notice its shadow and boldly crawls out of the hole. This sign is considered good - it means that spring will come soon. If Groundhog Day turned out to be sunny on February 2, the animal will most likely be frightened of its shadow and run back into the mink. Such a sign portends at least 2 more months of cold weather.

On this day, all Americans whoit is known what Groundhog Day is, they thank the animal for the prediction and in every possible way praise the favorite of the nation. Americans are incredibly faithful to traditions, they still regularly keep statistics of groundhog predictions, and only 40% of predictions are correct. However, despite the disappointing statistics, entire festivals dedicated to fortune tellers are still held in the US and Canada.

History of the holiday

Traditional groundhog day originated in ancient Rome, and its concept was absolutely identical, but instead of a groundhog, the Romans chose a simple hedgehog as a predictor. In Rome, the holiday was also celebrated on February 2, when the hedgehog was awakened and looked at his behavior. The result, as well as with the groundhog, depended on the courage of the animal - whether it sees or does not see its shadow, gets scared or nevertheless crawls out of the hole.

Groundhog Day in America began to be celebrated in the state of Pennsylvania, when one day on February 2, a groundhog suddenly crawled out of a mink, although theoretically it should have been hibernating. The locals were extremely surprised and saw some meteorological meaning in this, and the history of the holiday in the modern world began with this.

The whole world learned about Groundhog Day about 120 years ago, some countries of Western Europe adopted this tradition and preserved it to this day. In Russia, the hedgehog acts as a predictor, northern Germany wakes up the badger, and in America, due to the absence of both, the groundhog was chosen.

How to celebrate Groundhog Day

Today the groundhog holiday is not connectedso much with predictions, but with a simple desire to break away for a day from ordinary gray life. There are many ways to cheer yourself and the company on this day. If your friends also know what Groundhog Day is, invite them to throw a little party with fun games.

You can, for example, play the game "The Beast". This is a kind of pantomime when the participants stand in a circle, and the host whispers the name of any animal in everyone's ear. The players then try to guess who is who. You can also arrange a holiday with your family, for example, switch roles: the husband is doing magic at the stove, and the wife is playing computer games, while the children are free to do whatever they want, they will surely come up with something to puzzle their parents.

Groundhog Day and religion

The fact is that February 2, from an astronomical point of view, is the middle of winter, this day marks an equal segment between the spring and autumn equinoxes, so it is important not only as an American holiday.

For example, the Catholic Church on this day celebrates the Presentation of the Lord or the Tombs. Interestingly, this holiday (like many others) came from paganism, where it was considered the day of sacrifice to the god Perun.

However, the traditions of the pagan holiday are incredibly close to the concept of Groundhog Day: on the day of Thunderbolts, they also observed the weather. If the day turned out to be frosty, it means that warming is expected soon, and if it is warm outside on February 2, the harvest will be poor. A snowstorm meant a long winter.

The most famous groundhogs-predictors

The very first and most famous groundhog meteorologist was the founder of the holiday. He lived in Pennsylvania and his name was Phil, and the Americans came up with a whole title for him in a few lines, and the city of Punxsutawney was dubbed the "Weather Capital".

Canada also has its own hero - Willie from Wearton. The groundhog is known for waking up exactly on February 2 every year, after which the owner of the animal (and part-time mayor) listens to the prediction that the groundhog whispers in his ear. After the mission is completed, the groundhog, yawning, returns back to the hole. It is unlikely that the animal knows that a whole fan club has formed among Canadians, and on the Internet it has a personal website that has won several awards … Moreover, the largest groundhog sculpture also belongs to Willy, erected in 1995 by a Canadian sculptor, apparently also a member of at the Wyarton Willie Fan Club…

Despite the inaccuracy of predictions, groundhogs are still revered in both the US and Canada, because people still want to believe in miracles, living in today's dry world…
