Middle class math: what should parents know?

For every parent, their own child is both smart and handsome. And when the teacher recommends doing certain exercises at home to consolidate knowledge, then there is dissatisfaction among mothers and fathers who believe that only kindergarten teachers should conduct mathematics classes in the middle group. However, when learning together, children will quickly understand the new material.

What should a 4-year-old child know?

Each group works according to its own program, which indicates the knowledge and skills that will be formed in children by the end of the school year. Parents are required to study this material, rewrite and, if necessary, purchase this program in order to conduct practical math classes at home.

According to psychological research, children aged 4-5 should have the following mathematical knowledge.

• Understand the meaning of the terms "one-many", "more-less-equally", "higher-lower-right-left-closer-further-between-for-before-after-about-near.”
• Be able to count to five and back. Know how to count to ten.
• Learn to correlate a number with the number of objects and a number with a number, solve the simplest logic puzzles, use the signs: "=", "+", "-".
• Be able to reduce, equalize and increase objects among themselves.
• Distinguish 5 geometric shapes: circle, rectangle, square, oval, triangle.
• Be able to compare objects by height, width, length.

In some preschools these requirements are higher, in others they are lower. It all depends on the educational program and the relationship with the school, where the children then go after kindergarten. Also, children should freely solve examples for addition and subtraction by “1” using visual material.

What should middle school math be like?

Any math activity should be age-appropriate and contain elements of novelty and play. Despite the fact that children receive notebooks, cards for work, they get tired of performing monotonous actions: counting objects, naming them and drawing lines from them to a similar figure.

Therefore, a math class in the middle group should be interesting and contain intrigue. For example, a fairy-tale hero came who cannot get home on his own, and the children help him cope with difficulties. Lessons with fairy-tale characters allow you to solve the task with the whole group, part or give individual instructions.

Usually 3 tasks are assigned for one lesson: two forconsolidation of the material and one to receive new information. For example, counting to five, geometric shapes and days of the week. Tasks need to be thought out so much that the teacher can see the level of knowledge of each child. If you ask mathematical questions periodically throughout the day, then it will not be difficult to determine the level of children.

How does a teacher prepare for math classes?

Group math classes will be interesting if you prepare for them in advance:

• prepare didactic, demonstration and handout material;
• stock up on a literary base, where there are numbers, logical riddles;
• find warm-up exercises on a given topic;
• find fairy tales with a mathematical twist;
• combine knowledge of mathematics with creativity: drawing, applique, modeling.

If the teacher is fluent in literary material, then even classes with workbooks can go unnoticed by children, because at the first sign of fatigue, preschoolers do warm-up exercises, enrich vocabulary, repeating poems after the teacher.

If between written tasks to organize competitions between groups, then children also easily memorize the material. For example, in the first group, pupils should take one red circle from the basket, and in the second group, each child should have three green triangles in their hands. Or each child has his own number, and he must stand under his serial number.

Easierconduct classes if notes are ready for the entire learning process with this group of children. Then, with the next stream of kids, the lessons will only be adjusted.

Math is everywhere: puzzles for parents

Not all parents understand how to do homework with their children at home. That is why mothers should learn in advance about the content of the program for which they are being trained. In addition, important information about the development of children in each lesson is posted in each group at the parent stand.

It is important for parents to know the basic requirements, and tasks can be seen in the outside world. For example, when walking with a child on the playground, fix the ordinal and countdown to 5-10 in the house with scores. You can count the steps on the ladder, cats, frogs, ducks, kids…

Geometric shapes can be recreated using sand molds, drawing with crayons, or helping out in the kitchen. Even dividing fruits between sisters and brothers equally or bringing two onions and four carrots to mom is also a kind of math lesson (in the middle group, children can do such tasks).

Examples of puzzle games

If parents can find mathematical problems for addition and subtraction themselves, then it is more difficult to find literary material. Some are lazy, others lack knowledge, so educators should hang out didactic cards with verses and riddles in mathematics in the group.

Mathematics lesson in the middle group and at home, with interesting rhymes, puzzles, rhymes will be remembered by children faster. If you introduce elements of theatrical, finger games and fairy tales, then the child will be able to understand even complex material. The main thing is to make sure that the preschooler does not memorize the material, but understands it, then he will not have problems with mathematics at school.
