A bedtime story

The beginning of this mystical holiday takes from Celtic mythology. The priests of this ancient people, called Druids, gathered in oak groves, lit fires, and the common people made noise and had fun until the morning. What was the reason for such wild fun? The Celts believed that on the mystical night of the last October day, the boundaries between the worlds of people and spirits become thinner, winter finally comes into its own, and the prince of shadows with his retinue goes for a walk. For this reason, the Celts believed that it was imperative to dress up in costumes of evil spirits so that the spirits would recognize a person as their own. According to the ideas of ancient people, the evil spirit had an animal-like appearance, so the costumes of those raging around the fire were made of fur. In those days, the holiday was called the name of the ruler of darkness - Samhain.

People on this magical night desperately struggled with sleep so that the devil would not drag them away, taking advantage of the helplessness of the sleeping.

The coming Romans did not see anything reprehensible in this costumed action, so they successfully combined it with celebrations in honor of the goddess Pomona.

Unusual symbiosis

It is noteworthy that even the Catholic Church did not eradicate Halloween celebrations. Rather, the higher clergy of the Vatican, of course, opposed the pagan carnivals. Therefore, the Pope deliberately moved the solemn date of All Saints' Day to November 1, but by this he unwittingly connected both holidays. A paradoxical situation has taken root all over the world: along with Catholic masses, mummers visit houses with insistent demands for sweets and other treats.
