The beginning of the 1990s was a very difficult time for the state, as well as for other member countries of the USSR. The economic crisis has led to confusion. Factories closed, the standard of living of the population fell, and crime increased. But gradually life began to improve.

During the period 1991-1996 Independence Day was celebrated on July 27th. This date dates back to the Declaration of Sovereignty of Belarus, signed in 1990.

From that day on, the country gained independence. But this might not have happened if in 1944 the Soviet soldiers had not forced the Germans to the west. After all, according to Hitler's plans, 75% of the population would be exterminated. The rest would become slaves. Therefore, in order to perpetuate the memory of the heroes-liberators, it was decided to set a different date.

The initiator of the transfer of the holiday was the President of Belarus. At his suggestion, a nationwide referendum was held in 1996, as a result of which 88.18% of Belarusians voted to change the date of the holiday to July 3. Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus has since coincided with the day of the liberation of the capital of the country.

A year before this significant date, a new national emblem and flag were chosen in a referendum.

July 3 is officially considered a public holiday.

Various festive events are held all over the country. But the Independence Day is celebrated on a grand scale in Minsk.
