History of the holiday
In 1986, the International PEN Club initiated the establishment of a holiday date. The organization was founded in the 1920s by the English writer Katherine Amy Dawson-Scott. The association was headed by J. Galsworthy.
The name of the club stands for Poets, Essayists, Novelists, which means "poets, essayists, novelists." The abbreviation PEN corresponds to the English word, which means "pen for writing."
PEN was created to oppose any crackdown on free speech inside and outside the country. According to the members of the organization, writers have the right to express their own opinion, to criticize the political system of their country, government bodies, and the social sphere. Since it is important to observe the measure when working on literary works, the PEN Club opposes false publications, falsification of data, false interpretation of facts for political, group and personal purposes.
March 3 has been chosen as the date of the professional holiday of writers. World Writer's Day was established at the 48th congress of the club.

Free Speech: Rethinking
Trends in the development of modern society (democracy, informatization, expansion of the sphere of influence of the media, Internet resources, political transformations in a number of countries) necessitate a clear definition of the concept of "freedom of speech" in relation to the realities of today. World Writer's Day is celebrated not only by the workers of the pen, but also by everyone who is related to literature, culture, and art. Every year on March 3, educational institutions hold literary matinees and evenings, creative meetings with writers and poets.
Preschoolers and secondary school students get acquainted with children's literature, read poetry, participate in skits, share their impressions about what they read at library lessons. This is how the World Writer's Day is celebrated in the post-Soviet space. Events are consistently successful.

So, for example, Ufa schoolchildren not only listened to the performance of the children's writer Svetlana Voytyuk, but also took part in the performance based on the author's work. World Writer's Day is also known for the fact that on March 3 the most talented wordsmiths are awarded. Prizes are awarded on other days of the year. So, in 2015, Sergey Nosov became the winner of the Literary Bestseller for his novel Curly Brackets.
Elena Dorman was awarded the Alexander Pyatigorsky Literary Prize for translating A. Schmemann's philosophical work "The Liturgy of Death and Modern Culture".
The International Booker Prize has been awarded to the Hungarian writer-screenwriter Laszlo Krasnahorkai for literary merit.
