Turkish weddings are not just a celebration. A long process based on ancient rituals. Like many Muslim (however, not only Muslim) weddings, it consists of several stages. Despite the fact that Turkish youth often make their own decisions about marriage, arranged marriages still take place in Turkey.

First of all, the bride, and then the matchmaking

Marriage in Turkey begins with the fact that the groom's parents announce to their relatives that they are looking for a bride for their son. All relatives are connected to the search. As soon as a suitable girl appeared on the horizon, the first ceremony begins - the bride. Turkish weddings are impossible without them.

Only women, led by the groom, participate in the bride. After the show, both parties part ways and discuss the outcome. If the girl is liked, and her parents are arranged by the groom, a matchmaking day is appointed, the decision on which (as well as on further events) is made by men. Ahiska Turkish weddings are especially strict about customs: even verbal formulas for eachtheir ceremonies strictly correspond to the Qur'an. Three times, first the groom's relatives, and then the bride's relatives, loudly announce the upcoming engagement. By the way, very often even a Russian-Turkish wedding follows the same scenario, especially if the groom is a Turk. Usually matchmakers make trips to the bride's house several times and only then receive consent: this is the custom. To seal the deal, the groom gives the bride a ring and a handkerchief, and the parents discuss the details. This stage ends with a feast.

Step three - engagement

It takes place at the bride's house. Relatives are invited, in a solemn atmosphere, the parties exchange gifts, and an expensive ring is put on the bride's finger. For some nationalities, the groom may not be present at this event: his relatives are enough. Turkish weddings and customs are different in details: it all depends on the nationality, place of residence, etc.

Here comes the wedding!

Turkish weddings consist of two stages. It begins with the hanging of the wedding flag in the groom's house. The bride’s friends and relatives gather in the bride’s house, they smear her feet and palms with henna to the traditional chants, and then have fun. The second stage is the removal of the bride from home. Usually a wedding train is made up, but some brides are still transported to the groom on a horse. The procession is led by a car with a dowry, then the bride is driven, girded with a red belt (a sign of innocence). Dancing guests accompany her from behind. Before the young woman crosses the threshold of her husband's house, water will be poured under her feet (from the evil eye), and the shoals andthe door will be smeared with honey and oil (to we alth). Exactly at midnight, young people go to the bedroom to the chants of the guests. And then the real fun begins. Men fire their guns, announcing the beginning of the wedding night, then arrange a torchlight procession. In the morning, the mother-in-law hangs up a sheet to prove the bride's purity.

Turkish weddings: similar and different

It is natural that wedding ceremonies differ in different regions of Turkey. Somewhere each stage is accompanied by expensive gifts. Somewhere, a “henna night” is also arranged for the groom, accompanying the action with a public ablution and shaving of the latter. But no matter how different the traditional celebration in details, it always remains a colorful and vibrant spectacle.
