International Day of the Disabled is celebrated on December 3rd. According to sad statistics, approximately 10% of the world's population suffers from some kind of disease that has led to disability, and this is almost 650 million people. The purpose of the Day of the Disabled is to draw public attention to the existing problem, to support the dignity of people, their rights and well-being. On this day, informatization of the population is carried out, aimed at raising awareness of the benefits that the integration of people with disabilities into various aspects of life can bring.

The role of the United Nations

Unfortunately, the majority of people with disabilities still face problems that prevent them from fully participating in public life, forcing them to be practically isolated from society. In developing countries, people with disabilities are often denied basic human rights to food, he alth care, education, employment and reproductive he alth. In this regard, the activities of the UN are aimed at ensuring the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities: their participation in political, civil, social, economic and cultural life inequal conditions with other citizens of the state.

International Day of the Disabled is another day when there is a reason to speak out about the existing problem. At the moment, there is an international legal instrument, the task of which is to ensure the empowerment of people with disabilities in their interests. This document is called the “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.”

How the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated

To ensure a focus on non-traditional and enabling measures to promote international standards and norms related to persons with disabilities, both governmental and non-governmental organizations are involved in the celebration of the Day of the Disabled, with the mandatory participation of the private sector. The main activities can be discussions, forums and information campaigns on the eve and directly on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Events of a solemn nature can be planned and organized in different places. Basically, they are aimed at demonstrating and highlighting the contribution of persons with disabilities to society.

Taking action

As part of this Day, all attention will be focused, among other things, on practical measures that will improve the implementation of norms and standards for people with disabilities.

A particularly important contribution can be made by the media that assist in holding the Internationalday of the disabled with maximum informatization of all groups of the population. But, as a rule, the media inform us about this problem all year round, covering the most burning issues and ways to solve them. For example, on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in 2013, UN International Secretary Ban Ki-moon announced the opening of the UN Accessibility Center at its headquarters, which indicates another step by society towards people with disabilities.
