Just a few years ago, Jack Russell Terrier mini dogs were a rarity in our country. Today, many breeders sell such puppies. And of course, the owners of such dogs would like to know what are the features of their character, as well as how to properly care for them.

History of the breed

Jack Russell Terriers were bred in Britain in the 19th century. The first such dogs were bred by a great hunting lover priest John (Jack) Russell. According to legend, this monk bought from one of the women from the village next to the monastery a small and very nimble bitch named Trump. After training, this dog just showed itself perfectly in fox hunting. A small dog easily penetrated into the holes of the beast and drove it out. Admiring the virtues of the dog, John Russell decided to make her litters the basis for breeding a new breed of hunting dogs.

Later, the terriers obtained by the monk were widely used for hunting not only foxes, but also other burrowing animals. Officially, the breed was registered in 1904. A little later, it was named afterthe name of its creator.

Initially, two types of Jack Russell Terriers took part in the exhibitions - with a rectangular body and short paws and with a square body and long paws. On the white body of Jack Russells, among other things, there are always spots that can be black or brown in different shades. According to legend, in order to make these dogs more aggressive, Jack Russell crossed some individuals during breeding with bull and terriers. Jack Russells with black spots allegedly originated from this. Such dogs actually have a more angry and aggressive character than individuals with brown markings. Sometimes they even have the characteristic bite of a bull and terrier.

According to the characteristics of wool, the following varieties of Jack Russell Terriers are distinguished:

• shorthair;
• shaggy;
• broken (medium length wool).

Representatives of the breed of all these types are allowed to show. That is, according to the standard, any of these types of dog hair is not a defect.

Character

To date, Jack Russell Terriers are considered the most intelligent breed of all miniatures. Such dogs are easy to train, and on the hunt they are able to calculate the situation several steps ahead. Also a distinctive feature of this breed is mobility and activity. The owners of such a dog, keeping it in a city apartment, will have to walk with it at least 2 hours a day. Without physical activity, the Jack Russell Terrier will quickly get bored and may even begin to "hooligan" - nibbling on the owner's things, barking for no reason, playing with inappropriate objects, etc.

Experts do not recommend owners of such dogs to have any other pets. Jack Russell Terriers were bred, as we found out, for hunting. Therefore, they usually perceive any domestic animals, including cats and parrots, only as prey.

This breed usually gets along well with children. But experts still do not recommend leaving a child alone with a Jack Russell Terrier. Small children sometimes treat dogs like toys. Despite their small size and almost decorative appearance, Jack Russell Terriers are serious and somewhat wayward dogs. They require a fairly strict approach to education. First of all, such a puppy needs to be inspired, which in no case should be done. Attempts by the dog to bite one of the family members, gnaw on the owner's things, etc. should be stopped immediately.

As for the actual training, then, as already mentioned, jack-Russell Terriers are very smart and intelligent dogs. Using standard technologies, the owners of such a dog can very easily teach him to bring newspapers and slippers, jump over his legs and even, for example, perform somersaults. One of the characteristics of Jack Russell Terriers is that they love to be the center of attention. Therefore, in the future, a dog of this breed will demonstrate its skills to friends of the owners and even just random passers-by with great pleasure.

The price of mini Jack Russell Terriers fluctuates on average between 25-35 thousand rubles. Of course, it is recommended to buy such dogs not from ads on the Internet, but directly from breeders. In this case, you should first make sure that the seller has a positive reputation. From a good breeder, you can buy a guaranteed thoroughbred dog, and not a half-breed. In addition, such a puppy will most likely already have all the vaccinations necessary for its age.
