Cats, like any other predators, have a very delicate sense of smell, they distinguish smells hundreds of times better than humans. This feature can be used by the owners if you need to protect some places in the apartment from pet encroachments. Of course, the most effective way to protect things from a cat is to close the doors, but when this is not possible, you can go for a little trick. It is necessary to make sure that in places forbidden for the animal there is an aroma that is unpleasant for the latter.
Before you put "aromatic barriers" in the apartment, you need to find out what smell cats do not like (all without exception), and which one - only your pet. The fact is that the most frightening odors are unpleasant not only for animals, but also for people, so prevention should be approached carefully. So, what smell do cats hate and how can it help protect the apartment?
The most terrible fragrance for cats is fragrant rue (pictured right). It contains essential oils that have a very unpleasant odor. Use said plantit is recommended only in the most hopeless cases, since it is also dangerous for people, for example, it can cause allergic reactions.
What smell do cats hate
Food:
- Citrus.
- Any seasonings and spices. Peppers (ground or potted), fresh garlic, ginger, onions are leading here.
- Vinegar.
- Some dairy products (this applies to adult cats). The beast can be disgusted with milk, fermented baked milk, but at the same time it is happy to eat cheese.
Some experienced owners advise sprinkling undesirable places for cats to visit with ground pepper. But, firstly, strong dirt is diluted in this way, and secondly, this remedy is ineffective due to the fact that the smell quickly disappears.
Here are some other foods that have smells that repel cats: chocolate, cinnamon, mint.
Pets don't like medicines (valerian doesn't count!), household chemicals (from dishwashing detergents to bleaches), cosmetics, especially nail polishes, perfume with a strong smell. But cats gnaw on natural olive soap for a sweet soul.
But the smell that cats absolutely cannot stand is alcohol (and not only cats, I must say). Fume for pets is like an indicator of danger: they simply won’t fit a person with the smell of alcohol from their mouths. Cigarette smoke is also unpleasant for animals, but if a cat can start rubbing against a guest who smells of tobacco, she does not show her disposition towards him, but tries to interrupttobacco amber with its smell. True, if the owners smoke, then the animal is most likely already used to this.
How to fool a cat with smell
Once you figure out which smell cats can't stand, you can move on to action. Of course, not all of the presented fragrances can be used as a deterrent. For example, you can't use milk. If the pet reacts negatively to citrus fruits, orange peels can be laid out in a forbidden place. True, they quickly dry out, and cats are more than indifferent to the dried peel. The procedure will need to be repeated until the cat gets used to not being there.
How to protect indoor plants
Houseplants are a separate item in the strategy of protecting an apartment from a cat. Cats are very attracted to the smell of the earth, and they are ready to go to any trick to dig in a flower pot. There are many cat repellent sprays available now, but these are generally not to be used to protect indoor plants. In this case, to stop the pet, it is necessary to eliminate the smell of the soil - drape the pot or pour shells or pebbles on the surface of the earth.
