Stationery, which is called "file", is a plastic transparent bag that is designed to store paper and protect it from any damage. Most often, this bag is transparent, but sometimes it can be colored in other shades, which, however, should not deprive the bag of transparency.

A distinctive feature of this stationery is perforation on one side - it is performed so that the package can be fastened together with other packages and fixed inside the folder. To do this, you need a special folder, which will have a special mechanism installed - arched or some other.

It would seem that everything is pretty clear, but suddenly the word “multifora” appears, which raises many questions. It turns out that this is what many people call this stationery.

But which option is correct? Multifora or file? How to speak correctly? The answer to this question is not simple and unambiguous, as many would like. The fact is that in a certain context (mainly in a territorial one), both words can be used. But still, which is better to use? Multifora or file - which is correct? It is in this that youthis article will help you figure it out.

When you wonder which word is better to use, multiphora or file, how to say it correctly and what is the difference, you will quickly realize that the word "file" is much more common. It is used almost throughout Russia - somewhere in everyday life there is only it, somewhere it is adjacent to another term.

It is worth noting that in some places a derivative of this word is also used - “file”. Also in some regions it is customary to say "file". However, this does not yet answer the question, what is better to use - "multifor" or "file"? How to speak correctly? If you say "file", then you will most likely be understood almost everywhere. But before using this word, you need to look at where it came from.

Origin of the term

Of course, it does not take a genius to understand that this word is borrowed from the English language, where it sounds exactly the same. However, everything is not so simple here - the fact is that this name is rather curious. Paper files are called in England and America completely differently. But the folder-folder, which is designed to store these transparent packages, is called "file".

Apparently, some mistake occurred in the process of word formation, which as a result settled down. And now in Russian this stationerybelonging is called a file, while originally it meant not files for papers, but folders for files.

However, you should not think that the term "file" is used always and everywhere - in Russia there are regions where this concept is known to people. And there are even places where it is the only one that is used on an ongoing basis. One of the most striking examples is Siberia, where if you say in a stationery store that you want to purchase a file, they will not understand you, since there this item is called exclusively a cartoon. So if you find yourself in Siberia, then in the store it’s better to say that you need, for example, an A4 multifor.

How did this name come about? Unlike the file, the multiphora does not have a clear source, and historians cannot agree on exactly where the given name came from. So the multifor folder sounds a lot more mysterious than the file folder.

Origin of the term

The simplest option is the origin of this term from the Latin word "multifora", which means "many holes", that is, the feminine gender of an object that has many holes. But this is not the only version - many believe that the reason for such popularity of this term beyond the Urals is the fact that there was a company that produced and distributed stationery - and this company was called Multifora.

There are also other language variants - for example, the Italian phrase"multi foro" literally translates to "many holes". Someone suggests that the name comes from the English phrase "multi for", which could be translated as "a lot for something", if it really was a phrase. But in fact, this combination is not used in English, so this option is just another attempt to put forward a crazy theory.

The last option looks more realistic, although still inferior to the first two - some people believe that the word "multifora" is short for the word "multiformat". This version seems logical due to the fact that, due to the arrangement of perforated holes on one side, the multifor fits almost any folder-folder. There is also an option that multiformat means that there are different files - A5, A4, A3 and some others. However, this version looks much less likely. A5 files are not as popular though.

The term "pocket"

Much less popular is the term "pocket", which is used mainly in the very west of Russia, closer to the border with Estonia and Latvia, as well as in St. Petersburg. It is there that you can hear someone call this stationery a pocket or pocket.

Origin of the term

Most likely, this term came from the peculiarity of this package - most often it is fixed in a folder so that the hole remains on top and the contents do not fall out. ATthe resulting file looks like a pocket and functions exactly the same.
