Wax crayons are art materials, united under the general name "pastel". The pastel used in painting and graphics can be wax, oil and dry. This classification is determined by the way the material is made.

It is easy to guess that the base for the described crayons is wax, to which color pigments are added. Such pencils of the best quality are produced only from natural raw materials and vegetable dyes.

How to use wax crayons

There are some great techniques that give amazing results. The classic way is sketching. It is made with a pencil of the color that will be the main one in the gamut of the drawing. Then shades are applied to the sketch. Wax crayons (oil and dry pencils, by the way, are used at this stage in exactly the same way) are used in the drawing first dark, then light. The strokes that will lie on top must be done very carefully so as not to rip off the wax already laid on the paper.

Sgraffito Method

Btranslated from Italian - "scratched" drawing. It is carried out in the technique of engraving. You will need wax crayons, paper and a knife. Pastel is thickly applied to a sheet of paper - first light, then dark. The contours are scratched with a knife.

Stained glass enamel method

We'll have to stock up on a lattice-stand. Burning candles should be placed under it, and on it - a metal or porcelain plate, on which a sheet of paper will lie (experts advise putting a newspaper under it). The meaning of the method lies in the fact that in the process of waxing the surface must be constantly heated. The crayons melt on the warm paper for a delightful enamel effect.

Encaustic

This is also a method of drawing with melted wax, but it is done differently. The image is voluminous, "alive". The method was used by the ancient Egyptians. You will need wax crayons, thick cardboard, a solid (without steam holes) iron. Multi-colored lines are applied to the sole of a slightly heated device and pressed, slightly turning, the iron to the surface of the cardboard. You will get beautiful divorces that can be turned into realistic hills, mountains and rivers, as well as outlandish abstract landscapes. Thinner and more precise lines can be made with a nose or an iron edge.

Blur Method

The drawing will turn out to be very mysterious and transparent if the image created with wax crayons is blurred with turpentine. Take a drop of solvent on a synthetic brush and lightly stroke the pattern.

Wax crayons in children's art

Crayons of various shapes and colors bring unprecedented creative pleasure to kids as well. Lines and strokes are colorful and embossed, and the tool itself does not require constant sharpening. Paper of different textures allows you to create unusual drawings and compositions. The paintings look very picturesque, for the creation of which watercolor and wax crayons are used. The photo on this page demonstrates a wonderful technique. First, a “wax” image is made on watercolor paper, and then painted with paints.

The second life of wax crayons

Drawing to a short tip and broken chalk can be turned into a beautiful souvenir or a new tool for the artist. The fragments are placed in heat-resistant molds and baked in the oven for two to three minutes, allowed to cool and removed. If colored fragments are mixed before the procedure, then the new chalk will turn out to be unusually colorful.
