Kettle machine is a piece of equipment used to join the outermost open loops on parts of knitwear (socks, stockings, etc.). The process of connecting loops is called kettle. This method of stitching parts is more practical and aesthetic than a hand-made seam.

Working principle

To fasten the edges of the product, the kettle machine is equipped with a needle conveyor (the so-called fontura). The edges of the parts to be joined are put on the needles of the conveyor (tokol) (one loop per one tokol). The needle carries out reciprocating movements along the grooves of the fontura tocols. Getting into the loops, the needle passes the thread through them, which connects the edges of the knitted parts.

Kettle equipment classification

In accordance with the number of threads that are involved in the formation of loops, knitting machines are:

  • Single thread. Used for finishing the edges of knitwear uppers (processing collars, sides, pockets) and for knitting parts of hosiery.
  • Two-thread. Used for knitting stockings, socks, tights and so on.
  • Three-thread. Finishing the edges of parts to prevent fraying.

Seams produced by knitting machines,should be invisible and elastic. This is achieved by the correct selection of knitting equipment, which must correspond to the class of the knitting machine. The easiest way to choose is to select according to the density of knitwear. For this, the number of loop rows per unit of length is counted. Their number will correspond to the class of the kettle machine.

More often, knitting (that is, working on a knitting machine) is carried out on equipment whose class is higher than the class of the knitting machine used. This is due to the fact that the fiber removed from the knitting equipment is subject to some shrinkage, and for easy putting on of loops on the tokol of the knitting machine, the distance between the latter should be equal to the interval of the loop step. If this condition is not met, it is necessary to stretch the canvas or increase the gap between tokols.

Kettelnaya machine is classified depending on the method of formation of stitches, the nature of the movement of the conveyor and the design of the main mechanism. In addition, the needles of these machines (straight, curved) and the movements of the fontura (continuous, periodic) are different. Putting on loops on tokols is done manually, and the machine automatically combines, trims, cleans and processes the seam.
