Canvas fabric is canvas. Her homeland is England. The fabric is heavy and very thick. It happens from pure flax or with the addition of some other impurities. Initially, it was used for sewing sails, so its second name is canvas canvas.
Application of fabric
The name of the fabric comes from the Dutch word pressening, which means "sheath".
Tarpaulin is widely used in human activities. Awnings, tents, covers, backpacks, shelters for agricultural products, for equipment for various purposes are sewn from it. It is used for sewing covers for vehicles. It is widely used for the manufacture of special clothing, mittens and military products. It is still actively used to cover boats and protect ship elements. They also make sails from tarpaulin now.
During the First World War, this material became very popular. Tarpaulin, the composition of which ensured its low cost, made it possible to replace expensive and scarce leather at that time. Soldiers' boots, belts, raincoats and mittens were made from the material. Whena torn hole, the product was very easily repaired. To do this, it was enough to put on a patch.
Fabric composition
Canvas fabric is made from cotton, jute or linen threads. Sometimes they are used in combination. And sometimes 100% are threads of the same type. Basically, manufacturers use 50% cotton and 50% linen. Linen is also used in its pure form without impurities. The density of the fabric allows it to be used in various fields: construction, metallurgy, army, agriculture. Russian tarpaulin fabric, GOST of which is 15530-93, most often has articles 11252, 11292, 11211, 11255. Letters are added to these numbers, which show the type of impregnation. The density of the fabric ranges from 350 to 700 g/sq. m.
The material is sold in rolls, which are usually 90 cm wide. The main colors offered by manufacturers are khaki, orange, straw, dark green.
Types of tarpaulin impregnations
Impregnations, which process the tarpaulin, give it new properties. The fabric becomes flame retardant, waterproof or bio-resistant.
Designations of impregnated fabrics (abbreviations by the first letters of words):
- SKPV is a lightfast combined increased water resistance;
- PV - increased water resistance;
- SCOP is a light-resistant combined fire-resistant impregnation;
- OP is just flame retardant;
- SKP - lightfast combined (waterproof and bioresistant) impregnation.
Waterproof impregnation
Ifwater-resistant impregnation of SKPV or PV is used, the material acquires the ability to resist the penetration of water from one side. Tarpaulin fabric, which acquires such properties, is indispensable in the manufacture of tents, awnings, shelters for vehicles, machinery and equipment. It is also used to make special clothing that can protect against moisture. These are jackets, overalls, raincoats, suits, mittens.
Water resistance is measured by the number of mm of water column.
This impregnation is applied to tarpaulins of the following types: 100% linen, semi-linen (50% cotton, 50% linen) and semi-jute.
Products sewn from waterproof tarpaulins have an article number containing the letters PV and SKPV. For example, article 11293 SKPV (half-linen fabric with waterproof impregnation) is used for awnings and overalls.
Flame retardant impregnation
Fire resistance is an important property acquired by a tarpaulin after using a special agent. Tarpaulin fabric with such characteristics is used in the metallurgical industry. Clothes are sewn from it for welders, firefighters, metallurgists and people who have contact with flammable objects. Flame retardancy is defined as the ability to withstand high temperatures and is measured by the number of seconds a fabric does not melt or burn. The fire, falling on the tarpaulin, immediately goes out.
This type of impregnation is suitable for half linen, jute and half jute tarps.
Products sewn from refractory material have an article in which there are letters OP. For example,11292 OP - semi-linen fabric with refractory impregnation. It is used for sewing overalls.
Biostable impregnations
These impregnations endow the tarpaulin with anti-rot characteristics. This allows you to use it when creating formwork, foundations, in earthworks, in logging facilities, in all those places where there are a large number of microorganisms. This impregnation is used for jute and semi-jute tarpaulin.
Types of canvas fabric products
Canvas fabric is not only shelters, tents and overalls. From it, and now they sew beautiful practical things for daily use.
For example, a canvas backpack is a very strong and modern accessory. It is often used by hunters and fishermen. It does not rub, it is easy to wash, and the back is not hot when worn. Backpacks are sewn from waterproof fabric. For tourists and the military, they offer a wide selection of bags of various sizes for every taste. The main goal is to conveniently place inventory, equipment, things in a backpack. Therefore, such products are equipped with many different pockets and compartments.
Also, strong belts are obtained from this fabric, which, after being decorated with rivets, look very stylish. For dogs, collars and leashes are made from it.
Why military tents are still made from canvas
It's obvious. The fabric has a number of positive properties:
- environmentally friendly material;
- water resistance can be 330mm water column;
- excellent protection againstwind and cold;
- fabric can be used for a long time;
- resistant to low temperatures;
- well ventilated;
- does not absorb dust;
- dries quickly when wet;
- does not produce static electricity;
- is a natural antiseptic;
- stops ultraviolet radiation;
- fire resistant;
- if the tarpaulin caught fire, it does not emit toxic substances when burned;
- capable of attenuating radiation from a computer, TV and radio by half;
- does not stretch or deform;
- does not take up much space when folded.
For the same reason, tarpaulins are used to make awnings for trucks carrying military personnel. The material that is used for such purposes is checked and approved by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. It should be high quality tarpaulin. The photos below show several options for tents for the military.
The tarpaulin is not used as much now as it used to be. It was replaced by new developments, synthetic fabrics, film, plastic and other materials.
At the same time, it's too early to say goodbye to him. There are many niches where the used tarpaulin is still indispensable due to its high quality and relatively low cost. Until now, it is actively produced by numerous factories in Russia and the world.
