Craft stores offer craftswomen a wide selection of yarn, which differs in composition, thickness, color. A worthy place on the shelves is occupied by tweed yarn. What is she like and what attracted knitters so much?

What is tweed?

Tweed is a popular type of yarn, a characteristic feature of which is considered to be multi-colored blotches in a single-color thread. Many people associate this material with classic knitwear (warm sweaters and cozy sweaters). It is multi-colored blotches that give a monochromatic thing that very zest. Clothes from such material will certainly be chosen by those who prefer the British style of clothing and restrained elegance.

History of Appearance

Tweed yarn was invented in Scotland in the town of Harris. It was there that many years ago they began to make the classic Harris tweed. It was a thick yarn, which included only sheep's wool. A characteristic feature of Harris tweed was the uneven thickness of the thread and small color inclusions. The colors of the thread and inclusions were uniform, since only natural dyes were used for dyeing. However, the main merit of tweed clothing was not at all attractive. From such a thread excellent men'sjackets and sweaters that reliably protect against wind and cold in mountainous areas.

As for the name, there are 2 assumptions at once. According to the first, the yarn was named after the river Tweed, which flows on the border of England and Scotland. The second version is related to the confusion caused by the yarn delivery man. Because of the slurred handwriting, the word tweel (twill weaving of threads) written on the package was read by the recipient as tweed. Since then, the name has been firmly attached to this yarn.

Modern tweed yarn

Since the creation of tweed, the production of knitting threads has improved. Manufacturers have learned how to make perfectly even threads, use natural and artificial fibers in the process, and dye yarn in absolutely any color (even the brightest). Therefore, knitters can choose the material for knitting based on their own preferences.

Usually tweed yarns for knitting, made mainly from natural wool, have muted shades, and threads with a high content of man-made fibers are brighter.

Inclusions usually have a contrasting color. If the thread itself is made in gray, beige or any other light color, then the inclusions can be black, dark blue. In the dark thread, the opposite is true.

What to tie from tweed?

It's hard to make a mistake when choosing tweed, because this type of yarn is suitable for creating any thing that will be worn in the off-season and winter cold. The list will include:

  • sweatshirts;
  • sweaters;
  • tunics;
  • hats (tweed caps look very original);
  • scarves;
  • coat.

From thick threads, original things are obtained in a slightly brutal, “rustic” style. For delicate and sophisticated garments, opt for fine yarns.

Things knitted with satin stitch in tandem with tweed yarn will look more original, however, tweed can open up and show its non-triviality to the maximum only in a three-dimensional pattern. That is why for such a thread it is worth choosing braids, “bumps”, “elastic bands” and all kinds of arana.

In the list of benefits were marked:

  • low price (for comparison, the cost of tweed yarn from foreign manufacturers was taken into account);
  • 100% wool content - it makes things soft, very warm;
  • Easy to knit, the thread is soft and elastic;
  • after washing the finished product, the threads swell slightly, a fluffy layer appears.

However, Trinity tweed yarn also has some disadvantages:

  • not all threads in this line have a tweed effect, some types are moresimilar to melange;
  • the finished product is prickly (this is not so much a disadvantage as a feature of wool yarn).

Yarn with tweed effect is original, allowing you to create warm and beautiful things. However, like any woolen material, it has some features that you should study before buying.
