St. Petersburg is a beautiful city on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, where the cultural and economic life of the country is concentrated. It is known for its rich history, architecture, landmarks, special atmosphere and mostly educated cultural residents.

This city, like most cities in Russia, the CIS countries, Europe and America, has its own holiday - the Birthday of St. Petersburg, which falls on the end of May, or rather, on the 27th.

Rise of Saint Petersburg

The history of St. Petersburg begins at the beginning of the 18th century, when Peter I laid the first stones of a new settlement on the lands conquered from the Swedes. The year of foundation of Northern Palmyra is considered to be 1703, when the fortress of St. Peter-Burkh (in honor of Saints Peter and Paul), designed personally by the tsar, was built.

The city began to grow rapidly from that side, which is now called Petrogradskaya. By the end of the year, a temple was built, which was called Trinity, and the square on which it stood was the first pier of the new city.

Starting from 1712, the royal court, and then most of the official institutions, began to move from Moscow to St. Petersburg, this is how this city began to be called from 1720. At the beginning of the First World War, it was renamed Petrograd, and in 1917 it also met with this name. Well, in Soviet times the city was called Leningrad.

For almost two hundred years St. Petersburg was the capital of the Russian Empire.

The history of St. Petersburg includes a number of significant events for the whole country, including several revolutions:

• the Decembrist uprising in 1825;
• The Great October Revolution, which was then seen by Petrograd;
• 1917 was also marked by the February Revolution.

That's why St. Petersburg is unofficially called the city of three revolutions.

During the Great Patriotic War, it withstood the hardest blockade, in honor of which it was named the Hero City in 1945.

On May 8, 1965, for the heroism and courage of its inhabitants, who showed themselves in the struggle for the freedom of the Motherland in the Great Patriotic War, Leningrad was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal, it was awarded the official title of Hero City.

Sights of the northern capital

St. Petersburg is known for the most beautiful architectural buildings of the 18th-19th centuries, which have been preserved and restored, with theirparks and fountains, cozy squares and wide embankments.

The most significant ensembles of architecture include the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Nevsky Prospekt, Peterhof, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Smolny Institute, the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island, Palace Square, the Winter Palace, the Admir alty, St. Isaac's Cathedral.

The city has a huge number of beautiful bridges. The architecture of each of them is unique, but the Palace drawbridge made of cast iron is associated with the image of the city, which connects the two banks of the Neva and connects Vasilyevsky Island with the main part of the city.

Also world-famous is the first equestrian monument to the Russian Tsar - the Bronze Horseman. By the way, once a year - on the birthday of St. Petersburg - it is washed. This action is carried out by specialists together with several volunteers, who are determined by the results of a quiz on knowledge of the history of the city.

The city is also famous for its many different museums, the most famous of which are the Hermitage, the Central Naval Museum, the Russian Museum, the Kunstkamera.

After all, a truly impressive, magical sight - the rise of several parts of the bridge, illuminated by bright lights, against the background of the twilight sky, reflected in the water of the Neva, along which the ship slowly sails. This phenomenon evokes a romantic, mysterious mood to its witnesses, inspiringromantic acts and proposals.

Residents of the northern capital honor traditions and love cultural events, so the festive program, as usual, will be very diverse and will take place over two days off - Saturdays and Sundays.

St. Petersburg is celebrating City Day for the 314th time, and although this is not an anniversary, there will still be many festivals and entertainment programs for residents and guests of the city on the 27th and 28th of the last month of spring. The organizers of the holiday tried to diversify the events so that everyone could choose entertainment to their taste. There will be programs for children and adults, so the whole family can come.

Celebration program for May 27

The birthday of St. Petersburg will begin to be celebrated at 10.00 on Sennaya Square, where flowers will be laid at the monument to Peter the Great.

In an hour and a half, a solemn ceremony will take place in the Peter and Paul Fortress.

According to the established tradition, the birthday of St. Petersburg cannot pass without an ice cream festival on Ostrovsky Square, which will begin at 11.00 and end around 21.00.

At noon, it will be possible to lay flowers at the gravestone of Peter the Great in the Peter and Paul Cathedral.

The annual turning on of the fountains in the Summer Garden of Peterhof will also take place on this day, from 12.00 to 18.00.

On this day, in parallel with the celebration of the City Day, there will be a celebration of SKA - the hockey club that won the Russian championship. The Gagarin Cup will be awarded on Palace Square.

Also on Manezhnaya Square you can see the performance of military ensembles.

Starting from 11.00 in the Summer Garden there will be an open air of artists called "I draw St. Petersburg".
