Every second weekend of August is City Day in Kostroma. 2017 was no exception. We invite you to take a virtual journey through time and celebrate this glorious event together with the Kostroma residents.

City of Kostroma: foundation

In 1152, Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, 301 kilometers from Moscow, founded the city, which later spread on both sides of the Volga. It was named Kostroma. The town with a population of 276 thousand people is only 5 years younger than the capital, its history is rich in events and interesting facts.

An old Russian city attracts the attention of tourists, and in August 2017 there were especially many of them, because the “Day of the City of Kostroma” was celebrated here. And not just another celebration, but a jubilee, 865 years since the founding of the city. On this occasion, and also taking into account the fact that the emblem of the city of Kostroma turned 250 years old, and the Golden Ring tourist route is 50 years old, the events were approached with particular care and prepared for them throughout the year. Festive events were held in the city for 4 days: from August 10 to 13.

Program of events for the City Day of Kostroma in 2017year

The motto of the event can be conventionally designated as follows: "Dances and sports, competitions and spectacles, delicious food." The holiday was held on a special scale, which pleased both the guests of the city and its indigenous inhabitants. Even the sun could not spoil people's mood. The anniversary holiday "Day of the City of Kostroma" included more than 50 various events, both traditional and new.

The celebration started on August 10 with the opening of the heraldic exhibition "Coat of arms of the Kostroma province". On August 11, patriotic events were held: the Immortal Battalion procession and honoring the Kostroma residents who died in Afghanistan and the North Caucasus. The holiday continued with a more positive "Honey Spas" and the opening of the sculptural composition "Love" on the embankment. The lion's share of all events fell on August 12:

• rowing and beach volleyball championship;
• fair of craftsmen;
• theatrical holiday "Blossom, Kostroma!";
• Orange Ball Streetball Competition;
• sailing regatta "Who's Who - Kostroma 2017";
• Festival "Sausage";
• theatrical "Jubilee TRAVEL";
• children's entertainment activities;
• checkers and chess master class;
• competitions in CrossFit, armwrestling, power extreme;
• dance marathon "Time to dance";
• entertainment "Cheese rides";
• art festival;
• concert of bell ringing and Murakami group;
• "Silver Boat"- international fireworks festival.

The holiday ended on August 13 with the festivals "Art Kostroma" and "Flowers of Kostroma", an interactive program, a concert of symphonic music.

W altz of the Flowers

The festival-competition "W altz of Flowers" is held annually in the city. In 2017, it was dedicated to the City Day in Kostroma, its theme was “Bouquet of Kostroma”. All participants were awarded commemorative diplomas, but the best ones were determined by an unbiased and competent jury.

The composition "Forest Fairy" was created by florist U. Guzanova from moss, conquered all those present and took 1st place. On the 2nd - the collective work of teachers of school No. 4 "Little Country", and on the 3rd - a joint creative project of teachers of the 20th lyceum.

Family teams and CBT participants, groups of Children's Youth Centers and educational institutions, active residents of the city took part in the preparation of unusual flower arrangements. The main winner of the festival has traditionally become Beauty created by the hands of creative people.

Cheese rides

At the City Day in Kostroma on Molochnaya Mountain, an entertaining gastronomic competition "Cheese rides" was held. Everyone could try their hand at rolling cheese heads for accuracy or range. Competitions were held in 4 groups:

• children;
• male;
• female;
• general.

As in real competitions, the results were evaluated by the judges, and the winners received prizes. But the main task of the event was still the goal.create a festive, cheerful mood, make the audience laugh, “infect” them with joy.

Theatrical procession

The program of the City Day in Kostroma included a theatrical procession "TRAVEL-PROCESSION", which has become traditional here. The merry parade resembled a carnival procession and brought together about 1.5 thousand Kostroma residents. Students and labor collectives, sportsmen and pupils of children's centers walked side by side in festive columns. The whole procession was divided into 3 columns:

1. Ecological travelers led by Fyodor Konyukhov;
2. Cruise to childhood with your leader Gulliver;
3. Travelers along the Golden Ring led by the navigator Afanasy Nikitin.

Participants started preparations in advance: they sewed special carnival costumes, composed and learned chants. The audience enjoyed the procession a lot, took pictures, had fun, joked.

Silver Boat Fireworks Festival

The pyrotechnic show, held annually in the waters of the Volga River, is gaining momentum. The bright and unusually colorful festival is attended by both Russian and foreign teams of pyrotechnicians. On City Day, the sky of Kostroma is lit up with millions of lights and bright fireworks. The show goes on for about 1.5 hours and is accompanied by beautiful music. "Silver Boat" is known among the townspeople as one of the most favorite festive events. In 2017the fire show was already the 12th in a row.
