It was invented by John Mercer in 1844 and is based on the enrichment of natural plant cellulose fibers with sodium hydroxide (caustic soda).
As a result, their cell wall swells, increasing the fiber surface area, which becomes very smooth and shiny. ATThe mercerization process changes the chemical structure of the long-staple cotton threads, and the fabric (American cotton) becomes stronger and more easily dyed.
Products made from such matter are more attractive, comfortable to wear and easy to care for. Neither bright sunlight nor frequent washing can spoil them. Things are not deformed at all and retain their original shape for a long time.
